Why is Enterprise Elastic so expensive — and what are the alternatives?

Surprised by how expensive Elastic’s enterprise pricing can be?  You’re not the only one.  Licensing, support contracts, cloud markups, and feature bundling have made running Elasticsearch at scale very costly.  At Dattell, we often hear from clients that our services cost significantly less than Elastic’s direct enterprise offerings — while providing higher-touch, engineer-led support.

First, let’s look at how Elastic structures their pricing.

Understanding Elastic licensing vs. support packages

Elastic structures their offerings into two main parts: licensing and support.  You can buy a license without support, but most production deployments require both.

Elastic licenses

Paid licenses unlock “premium” features, including security (RBAC), machine learning, searchable snapshots, cross-cluster replication, and advanced alerting.

Elastic support

Separate enterprise support packages, priced based on node count, memory size, and SLA requirements (e.g., 24×7 response windows).

Why Elastic costs add up quickly

Minimums. Even small clusters often require 4+ licensed nodes.

Feature Bundles. You can’t pick features à la carte. Full enterprise licenses are required.

Cloud Premiums. Elastic Cloud adds additional markup compared to self-managed licensing.

Opaque Pricing. Public pricing isn’t posted; you must request quotes, which can vary.

For mid-sized deployments, Elastic licensing and support can start in the high five figures annually.  For larger environments, total costs often exceed $500,000 per year — especially when factoring in cloud markups, licensing bundles, and enterprise SLA tiers.

How Dattell is different

We provide fully managed Elasticsearch in your environment — with the same technical excellence you expect from an enterprise provider, but without the overhead of a 5,000-employee company.  Our customers get direct access to senior engineers, faster response times, and predictable costs — not layers of bureaucracy.

Flat-rate pricing. We charge a flat-rate for our Elasticsearch consulting and support, typically between $100,000 to $250,000 per year — providing substantial savings for larger or complex deployments.

Consistent support. Our clients work with a dedicated engineer — the same person, day-to-day — who acts as an expert extension of your internal team, available via Slack or Microsoft Teams throughout the workday.

Elastic-certified. Our engineers are Elastic-certified, providing proactive architecture reviews, performance tuning, security audits, and 24×7 emergency support.

Engineer-lead.  By engineer-led, we don’t mean ticket queues and slow escalations. Instead of submitting a ticket and waiting days for real help, you work directly with a dedicated Elastic-certified engineer — the same expert every day — available throughout the workday via Slack or Microsoft Teams as an extension of your internal team.

We support both self-managed Elasticsearch (with or without a paid Elastic license) and Elastic Cloud deployments.

Want to bypass the licensing fees?

We can help you migrate to OpenSearch — a fully open-source fork of Elasticsearch that offers similar functionality without licensing costs.

OpenSearch benefits:
  • Apache 2.0 licensing (true open source)
  • Built-in security, alerting, and ML plugins
  • Lower total cost of ownership
We support both Elasticsearch and OpenSearch, helping you choose the right platform for your needs without vendor lock-in.  For more information, here’s our recent post looking at how Elasticsearch and OpenSearch compare.

How to save money on your Elasticsearch deployment

Elastic offers powerful technology, but enterprise licenses, management, and support can come with significant costs. Whether you want a more cost-effective partner for Elasticsearch or you’re exploring OpenSearch migration, Dattell can help.
