In 2025, Elasticsearch remains a top-tier platform for log analysis—but poorly designed ingestion pipelines can lead to slow queries, oversized indices, and costly infrastructure. Here’s how we recommend ingesting logs at scale, with performance, schema control, and long-term retention in mind.

Use a Dedicated Ingestion Layer

Avoid pushing logs directly into Elasticsearch.  Using a dedicated ingestion layer is important because it adds reliability and buffering. Additionally, it allows parsing, enrichment, and transformation before indexing.

Some popular options include:

  • Logstash with filtering and parsing logic
  • Kafka for scalable, fault-tolerant ingestion
  • Fluentd/Fluent Bit for edge collection

Normalize and Flatten Your Log Structure

Normalizing and flattening log structure improves query speed, reduces mapping conflicts, and simplifies Kibana visualizations.  Avoid deeply nested JSON. Flatten logs where possible, and normalize field names.

Use Index Templates and ILM Policies

Index templates and ILM policies control index growth and keeps hot storage lean.

Design index templates with proper mappings, shard counts, and ILM (Index Lifecycle Management) policies.  Use short retention for debug logs.  And use cold/warm/hot tiers for access-based optimization

Filter and Deduplicate at Ingest

Remove repetitive, uninformative logs (e.g., heartbeat or polling events). Drop fields that don’t add analytical value.  This is important because filtering and de-duplicating at ingest will help to reduce noise & cost, and to improve signal-to-noise ratio in dashboards & alerts.

Tag, Enrich, and Track Sources

Tag, enrich, and track sources to enhance filterability and enable routing different logs to different indices or retention policies.  Add metadata like environment, region, or app version using ingestion processors.

Monitor Pipeline Health

Use monitoring dashboards to track ingest latency, dropped/failed events, and shard pressure and queue lengths.
